The Things I See When I Walk My Dog (5)

It's that time of year when every bottle sweats and the flies swirl unceasingly around the curbside heaps of baking trash. Homeless men and women stick to park benches and the fountains reek of chlorine. The city, it seems, is primed to rot.

When I take the dogs outside the old one stops at the door. He wants no part of the sun. The puppy sprints ahead and retreats to the shade of a cherry tree.

It is the time for skin to burn. And so, it is the perfect time to sit outside and sip cold beer. To listen to meat sizzle over charcoal and take in its masking perfume.

  2. There is something to be said for spending my weekends up the mountains where there is the smell of BBQ, the chlorine is from my pool, and the only other odor is that of my families flower beds. I don't envy you a summer in the city. I am enjoying the warmer weather though. :)

  3. @Jewels - There is definitely something to be said for mountain getaway. I prefer them myself...and so do my dogs.

@Alice X Same. Occasionally, I even enjoy the smell of a bad summer barbecue.
