Crooked, Wooden, and Tall

This morning, surveying my twitter timeline, I came across an article. Among the images in that article were these:

The first image is of Crooked House in Sopot, Poland. I have done no research on it and know nothing about it. I love it. The second is the gangster house. I don't know if the building is really named that, but the people in Arkhangelsk, Russia call it that. Gangster house is a source of fairly heated controversy. Not only was it built by a purported gangster, it is believed by many to be a condemnable, hideous, eyesore. It is a 13 story tall wooden structure. I love it, too.

But I must ask myself, are these buildings beautiful. Architecturally they may be significant, or they may not. The crooked house, I believe, has some architectural cache in its foundation. The Gangster house might be no more than a large shack. Still, it is impressive. In the aesthetics of both I find something alluring.

Impressed upon by these buildings, I thought about my own. Not those that I own. I'm not fortunate enough to own even one. Those that I see everyday through the back window of my apartment.

Alone they are impressive. Together they are striking. Framed by that tree I enjoy them, and when the light strikes the Comcast Center (tallest on the right), and it reinvigorates my shadowy afternoon backyard, they are like mountains. If I stumbled across them on twitter though, I would not look twice.

  1. Philadelphia really does have some beautiful buildings in it...I have to agree with you there. That is quite the view you have! Pair that view with your garden oasis...you are a lucky man.

That first building reminds me of something that belongs in a Dr. Suess book or Alice & Wonderland. The second one looks like it belongs in Harry Potter or a sketchy horror movie. Wow...that made me sound like a huge dork. Oh well. Amazing photos. Thank you for sharing them.
